Framed Print of 19th Century Locomotive

The "George Washington" was built by William Norris of Philadelphia. On July 10th, 1836, this locomotive hauled a load of 19, 200 pounds at a speed of 15mph up the Belmont inclined plane on the Philadelphia and Columbia Railraod. Previously, no engine had ever attempted such a feat, the cars having been pulled up the grade by cables and stationary engines. It was a six-wheeler with a single pair of drivers, four feet in diameter, seated just ahead of the firebox and weighed only 14, 400 pounds. © Omikron / Science Source
