Woodcut of monsters from the Nuremberg Chronicle. Top row, Monoculus or Cyclops and the Blemnye. Middle row: Panotis (All-ears); a man with a huge stretched lip. Bottom row: Sciapod (Shade-foot) whose single leg has a foot so big he uses it as an umbrella to shade him from the sun, and a goat-man or satyr. The Nuremberg Chronicle is an illustrated Biblical paraphrase and world history that follows the story of human history related in the Bible; it includes the histories of a number of important Western cities. It is one of the best documented early printed book, an incunabulum, and one of the first to successfully integrate illustrations and text. © New York Public Library / Science Source
