Framed Print of White Lily, Medicinal Plant, 1737
"A Curious Herbal", Plate 11. Blackwell lists among the uses of the white lily: dissolving hard tumors and swellings; and breaking abscesses. The medicinal substance is an oil made from the flowers and roots. The white lily (Lilium candidum) is a plant in the genus Lilium, one of the true lilies. The white lily is not only a good source of starches and proteins but also vitamins B1, B2 and C, iron, calcium and phosphorous. Herbalists and traditional practitioners use white lily as a common home remedy for cuts, wounds, and ulcerations. White lily contains strong antibacterial properties that make it a good cure for treating wounds. Tea prepared from white lily flowers is an effective blood cleanser and purifier. Elizabeth Blackwell (1707-1758) was a famed Scottish illustrator and author who was best known as both the artist and engraver for the plates of "A Curious Herbal" (1737). © NLM / Science Source
