Framed Print of Bronze Age Seal, Riverboat
A chipped, rectangular seal with an everyday motif showing how riverboats were built, found in Mohenjo-Daro (Mound of the Dead) one of the largest city-settlements in the Indus Valley, now located in the province of Sind, Pakistan. The city was built around 2600 BCE and abandoned around 1900 BCE. The vessel on the seal has a shallow draft and cross lashing on bow and stern, which may signify reed construction. In the center is a small cabin and on the right can be seen part of the steering oar. The Indus script is a corpus of symbols produced by the Indus Valley Civilization during the Kot Diji and Mature Harappan periods between 3100 and 1900 BCE. Most inscriptions containing these symbols are extremely short, making it extremely difficult to judge whether or not these symbols constitute a script used to record a language, or even symbolise a writing system. In spite of many attempts, the script has not yet been deciphered, but efforts are ongoing. © New York Public Library / Science Source
