An unusual representation of Sagittarius in an astrological treatise by Abu Ma'shar (August 10, 787 - March 9, 886) a Persian astrologer, astronomer, and Islamic philosopher, thought to be the greatest astrologer of the Abbasid court in Baghdad. Sagittarius is most often represented as centaur. Here the animal part of the body is derived from a predator, perhaps a panther. The archer aims with his arrow on his own second head of dragon, which emerges from the end of his tail. Sagittarius is a constellation of the zodiac, the one containing the galactic center. Its name is Latin for the archer. A centaur is a is a mythological creature with the head, arms, and torso of a human and the body and legs of a horse. Most are wild and savage, known for lustfulness and drunkenness. © New York Public Library / Science Source
