Framed Print of Ozark Blind Cave Salamander
The Ozark Blind Salamander, Eurycea spelaea, was described in 1892 from a cave in Missouri. Larvae of this species feed on fresh bat guano to augment their diet. The story behind the odd diet choice is an interesting one. Some of the insectivorous bats that inhabit the caves where this salamander lives have short and inefficient digestive tracts. A shorter digestive tract grabs whatever nutrients can be quickly absorbed but passes food in short periods of time. Quickly passing food is important because the bats need to maintain the physics of flight, which includes a low body weight. By passing food quickly, the bats never hit a dangerous weight where they could no longer fly. Quite probably, the bat guano still chemically "smells" like insects, which may have been the initial attraction to the non-moving food item by the larval salamanders. This species is threatened from contamination of groundwater. These images were taken in Oklahoma in 2012. © Dante Fenolio / Science Source
