Framed Print of Ruins of the Hippodrome, 15th Century
Ruins of the Hippodrome, from an engraving by Onofrio Panvinio. The engraving, dated 1580, was based on a drawing from the late 15th century just before the Turks took Constantinople (1453). The spina that stood at the center of the chariot racing circuit was still visible then. In AD 203 the Emperor Septimius Severus rebuilt the city and expanded its walls, endowing it with a hippodrome, an arena for chariot races and other entertainment. The Hippodrome was the sporting and social center of Constantinople, the capital of the Eastern Roman Empire, the Latin and the Ottoman Empires. An inner wall was erected by Constantine I, and the city was surrounded by a triple wall of fortifications, begun during the 5th century by Theodosius II. The city was an impregnable fortress enclosing magnificent palaces, domes and towers. Although besieged on numerous occasions by various peoples, it was taken only in 1204 by the army of the Fourth Crusade and in 1453 by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed II. Wood effect frame, card mounted, 10x8 fade resistant photo print. Overall outside dimensions 14x12 inches (36x31cm). Environmentally and ozone friendly, 40mm wide x 15mm Polycore® moulding has the look of real wood, is durable and light and easy to hang. Biodegradable and made with non-chlorinated gases (no toxic fumes) it is efficient; producing 100 tons of polystyrene can save 300 tons of trees! Prints are glazed with lightweight, shatterproof, optical clarity acrylic (providing the same general protection from the environment as glass). The back is stapled hardboard with a sawtooth hanger attached. Note: measurements provided are estimated outer dimensions, which include both the image and the frame. While we aim to keep sizing consistent, exact dimensions may vary slightly due to differences in print size or production requirements, which may result in a variation in the overall size (up to approximately 2.5cm (1"))
