Framed Print of Islamic Scribe, 17th Century
This copy of Aja'ib al-makhluqat wa-ghara'ib al-mawjudat (Marvels of Things Created and Miraculous Aspects of Things Existing) by Abu Yahya Zakariya ibn Muhammad al-Qazwini (1203-1283) an Arab physician, astronomer, geographer and proto-science fiction writer. is undated but signed by the scribe, Sayyid Husayn Yazdi. The colophon, shown here, is unusual in having a portrait of a scribe immediately below the copyist's name. The volume must have been completed before 1546, when the impression of an owner's stamp for one Imad al-Din Zakariya ibn Muhammad ibn Mahmud Limuni was placed at the bottom of the page. The copy appears to have been produced in India. © NLM / Science Source
