Framed Print of Girolamo Cardano, Italian Polymath
Gerolamo Cardano (September 24, 1501 - September 21, 1576) was an Italian polymath, whose interests ranged from being a mathematician, physician, biologist, physicist, chemist, astrologer, astronomer, philosopher, writer, and gambler. He was one of the most influential mathematicians of the Renaissance, and was one of the key figures in the foundation of probability, of the binomial coefficients and the binomial theorem. He wrote more than 200 works on science. In 1570 Cardano was accused of heresy because of his computed and published horoscope of Jesus, created in 1554. Today, he is well known for his achievements in algebra. He made the first systematic use of negative numbers in Europe, published with attribution the solutions of other mathematicians for the cubic and quartic equations, and acknowledged the existence of imaginary numbers. Cardano is reported to have correctly predicted the exact date of his own death but it has been claimed that he achieved this by committing suicide. He died in 1576 at the age of 75. © Science Source
