Framed Print of "Gin Lane" by William Hogarth, 1751
"Gin Lane, " by British artist William Hogarth (1697-1764). London street scene depicting the horrors resulting from addiction to gin: child neglect and abuse, suicide, bankruptcy, and general social decay among the working classes. At lower center a woman drops her baby. A dying man sits with a cup, while in the background a dead drinker is being put into a coffin. People are fighting to buy gin from a distillery, while other people give their goods to a pawnbroker in return for money to buy more drink.
