Framed Print of George Custer, American Cavalry Officer
Engraving of General George Custer by Frederick Remington, 1875. George Armstrong Custer (December 5, 1839 - June 25, 1876) was an American Army officer and cavalry commander. Custer graduated last in his class at West Point in 1858. He fought in the First Battle of Bull Run and his troops played a decisive role in the Appomattox Campaign. After the Civil War, Custer was dispatched to the West to fight in the Indian Wars. He was suspended from duty in 1867 for being AWOL, having abandoned his post to see his wife. Custer was defeated and killed at the Battle of the Little Bighorn in 1876. The overwhelming defeat in his final battle overshadowed his achievements in the Civil War. © New York Public Library / Science Source
