Framed Print of Blood Transfusion, 1882
Entitled: "Direct transfusion of live blood performed on the 7th February 1882 by Dr. Roussel." A direct, person-to-person blood transfusion, conducted in Geneva, Switzerland, in early 1882. The recipient was a woman who became weak after she gave birth to premature twins. She reportedly recovered soon after this transfusion. This was 18 years before Austrian biologist Karl Landsteiner identified the main blood groups in 1900. Early transfusions were risky and many resulted in the death of the patient. By the late 19th century, blood transfusion was regarded as a risky and dubious procedure, and was largely shunned by the medical establishment. © New York Public Library / Science Source
